Chapter 3

“Yeah, I know. That’s what I was checking on . . . . and there was more!” Trip confided.

"The Captain wants to see you, Mr. Tucker. He seems really agitated. Are you up to walking?” Mr. Hardin {from Florida} had been so helpful with the passengers and now he was doing 'messenger’ duty.

“Thanks, Hardin. I’m okay. Laurie and I will head up that way.”
“You’ve hurt your arm again. It needs to be in a sling,” she said, though she knew he was ignoring her.

As they made their way to the captain, Laurie told him that she had been trying to get Holli's room in Las Vegas, but there was no answer. “What did Las Vegas say when the pilot told them what had happened? Have they sent out the rescue teams yet?"

Tucker stared at her for a minute, then said, "You know, he didn't even mention it. That's damn strange!” They made their way to the captain who was now lying on his back looking up at the sky.

“Captain, you forgot to tell me when the Rangers think they will get here. How many helicopters do they have?” The Captain looked at Trip without any recognition in his expression. He tried to speak but the bleeding started again. With that, he closed his eyes and couldn’t be roused.

“He’s going into shock! Do we have any blankets up here? Hand me those towels. They’ll have to do. All you people begin to move closer together. You that are here, circle around the Captain. We’ve got to keep each other warm. Put your thoughts on hold till we get out of this! Our lives may depend on it.”

To Laurie, he said, “You go this way and have everyone get as close together as possible. I’ll go the other way and do the same. Get back here as soon as you can!” His eyes held hers for a second and then he turned away.

Within minutes they were both back. “Trip, we need to check in with someone.” She had tried to reach Holli again, but got ringing only. “Do you know one of your crew’s cell numbers? Maybe they could find her and have her call me.”

He hesitated a second, then gave her the numbers. “Maybe she can notify the authorities.” Laurie punched in the numbers and a warm, friendly face said “Hello”.

“Hello, this is Laurie Layne and my sister is due in tonight on a flight from Dallas. Could you see that she finds her room?” Needless to say, there was dead quiet on the other end! “Hold on a minute… Trip, tell him why we need help and ask him to check on Holli.”

“How’d you get through?“ He took the phone from her and said “Hi, Jon.” He told him what happened and the predicament they were in, that they couldn’t get much information from the Pilot as to whether he sent out a “Mayday” message or not.
“Jon, call 911 and have them put something on the wire. Maybe they can triangulate our signals and determine where we are. We’re desperately in need of medical help up here.”

“They’re on the line now contacting Seattle. It shouldn’t take too long. Are you alright? You look awful. Who’s Laurie? I will keep trying her room, and I”ll send someone down to stay with her sister till we get you out.”

“Thanks, Jon. It is starting to get really cold. We’re okay for now. Laurie will hold on for you. I have several people I have to check on,” he said as he handed the phone to Laurie.

“Thanks, John. I really appreciate your checking on Holli.”

“What’s Trip doing checking the passengers? Where’s the pilot and the stewardesses?” Jon couldn’t believe it.

“All were injured when we came down,” Laurie informed him. “The plane has almost burned to the ground. Are the authorities making any progress? Our batteries will be going pretty soon.”

“Tell me what happened or let me talk to Tucker.”

Laurie filled him in. “There was an explosion underneath us when we were about an hour out. We really dropped and things were a shambles. They said it was an air pocket. Things leveled off for about 10 minutes and then we dropped again. After several more times, the stewardesses said to prepare for an emergency landing. Trip and I were sitting together and it was really rough. The pilot did a miraculous job of bringing us down.
With the stewardesses injured, Trip took over. Here he comes.”

“What’s that on your arm?” She was looking at the red marks on Trip’s arm.

“It’s fine. Has Jon gotten hold of the Rangers, yet? When will the helicopters be here?”

“Tucker, Mr. Tucker we need your help. Is Laurie there?” It seemed like all the passengers were calling at once.

“Jon, what the hell are they doing? Time is running out!”

“Take it easy, Trip, they’re working on it! What did you say about the injured? We’re just hearing on the news that your plane has not been heard from.”

“He’s already gone, John, and I have to go, too. Have they decided where we are? What’s the hold-up? I’ll have to call you later. Please take care of Holli. Say a prayer for all of us.”

Laurie moved among the people, encouraging them to talk about old times, good things that happened in the past. Projects they had. Things they accomplished. “That keeps the blood flowing and heads off going into shock! Keep as warm as you can. Cuddle up.”

“I heard what you said and it’s about time we took your advice.” Trip had just come up behind her.

A young couple pulled back and made room for them to join their group. Trip put his arm around her and pulled her close to him. She put her arms around his waist and shivered. She hadn’t realized just how cold she was.

“Now it’s your turn to put your head on my shoulder,” Trip confided. She didn’t resist.

“You’re shaking. I wish I had a coat to put around you, but arms will have to do.” He moved as close to her as he could and wrapped her in his arms.

“How long do you think it will take the Rangers to get here, Trip?” His arms around her felt so good.

“They’re probably getting their gear together right now. Won’t take ‘um long once they get in the air.” He just couldn’t tell her it might be hours before they were found.

“Did you say you work up this way?” Trip asked. “You said you were meeting your sister in Las Vegas.” She seemed to fit right in the curve of his arm.

“No, I’m going back to Dallas with Holli for a couple of days. That’s where our parents live.”

“I’ve never been to Texas. Is it all ranches and cattle?”

Laurie turned to look up at him. “You don’t really believe all that, do you?” She was laughing now.

Trip had an urgent desire to kiss her, which he did, partly because she was teasing him. Her lips were so soft and inviting that he couldn’t resist doing it again. As he leaned back against an outcrop, he pulled her with him. She put her head on his chest and she could hear his heart beating.

“Mister Tucker, when are they coming to get us?” asked Mrs. Bartowski, who had avoided the slide. “It is so cold.”

Sitting up straight, Laurie said “We better start ‘Rowing our Boat’! We four will start and then the next four start and so on.”

“Row, Row, Row your boat, gently down the stream,
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream . . . {next group start on merrily}”

It took a little doing, but pretty soon everyone was pitching in. The whole forest was coming alive.

“I’m sure whatever animals were around here are gone now. They may never come back,” Tucker teased. It lightened the mood.

“Why don’t you turn the phone on for a minute? We could call John again.” She knew he was trying to save the batteries, but he agreed with her and flipped the switch.

“Jackson Hole Emergency Response to Flight 319. Come in, please! Respond if you can hear my voice!”

“This is Flight 319! Are we glad to hear your voice,” Trip practically shouted.

“Flight 319, can I speak to Captain Anders, please?”

“The captain is unconscious, the co-pilot and stewardesses, too. This is Tucker and we need your help as soon as possible. It’s getting very cold up here.”

“Is there anyone in charge there? Can you tell me what happened? We’ve lost you on our screen.”

“Something exploded in the cargo hold and the plane crashed. We need help,” Trip retorted.

“Jackson Hole, this is Riley Smith, a passenger. Tucker and Laurie have done an impossible job up here. They got everyone off the plane and moved us out of harm’s way. We’re all helping one another. Just hurry!”

“This is Tucker, again. We’re trying to keep everyone from going into shock, but with the cold and no food, it’s going to be a long night! Any suggestions?”

“This is Lt. Rogers, Paramedics. We’re heading out right now. Any landmarks near you?”

“We can’t see too much, except tall trees.”

“We’re in the sky on our way. We should have you in sight very soon.”

“Rogers, can you see the plane burning? We seem to be in an open area, maybe a ski slope, with tall pines on either side. I can’t hear your engines, though.”

“It looks like Sirius is at the top of the slope,” put in Laurie. “Maybe part of Orion is overhead”.

“What constellation is Sirius in?”

“It is in Canis Majoris, the big dog.” Trip was looking at her now in askance. “How come you know so much about the stars? That’s my department,” he said and he gave her a squeeze. She responded by leaning against him. “I know,” she said.

He took her face in his hands and turned it up to his. He kissed her very gently at first, then took her in his arms and kissed her very passionately. “We’ll have to get everyone moving soon and there may not be another chance. I hope I didn’t offend you.”

Laurie turned his face to hers. She raised up to put her lips to his and he took it from there. As he eased her down on the grass she felt him wince when his arm gave way. He tumbled forward, with his body covering hers. As he tried to lift himself, Laurie whispered, “Trip, your arm. It’s broken!” He kissed her gently once again, then passionately. He didn’t want the moment to end and he knew she didn’t either.

He rolled over on his side. “My arm’s okay, it’s just sore.” He raised himself up on his other elbow. “We’ve had so little time to be together. I don’t even know what things you like, what you think is important or how you plan to change the world.”

“I don’t recall that you‘ve provided this information, either,” Laurie teased.

“Guess we’ll just have to spend more time together,” Trip drawled. “Not that I think is will make any difference.”

She responded by brushing her lips against his. “There are so many things we need to say, but, somehow, I don’t think it will change anything. How can this be happening?”

He kissed her possessively, pulling her to him. “No, it won’t matter as long as I can hold you right here in my arms. Whatever tomorrow holds for us, it could be ours together.”

People were starting to move now and he could hear his name being called from several different directions, Laurie’s, too. A quick kiss and they moved out, knowing this wasn’t over.
