Flight #319 - Chapter 4FLIGHT #319 by Mctrip7
~~~~~~ Chapter 4 They could see the helicopters just coming into view. Thank goodness for a bright moon tonight. “Trip, you go meet them. I’ll start moving everyone down the slope. Send someone up here for the most seriously wounded. Have someone take a look at that arm.” He didn’t let on that he had even heard her. MEN! By the time Trip reached the bottom of the slope, the paramedics were spilling out of the helicopters. The lead medic stuck his hand out and said, “You must be Tucker.” Trip pulled back, saying he was fine. “We have some seriously wounded people some twenty yards up the slope. I’ll show you where the captain is. The stewardesses are there, too. We ran out of blankets. Not enough time to get much out of the plane.” “Tucker, this is our job. This is what we do. You look exhausted. Let me have a look at that arm!” Still protesting, Trip couldn’t avoid both Lt. Rogers and his partner.” “Bill, you and Smitty head up that slope. There may be some EM evacs up there.” Rogers took one look at Trip’s arm and said, “You’re out of here! Jim, see that he’s on the next flight.” Tucker got up to leave, but Rogers caught him by the shirt. “Where do you think you’re going? Restrain him!” With that his partner gave Trip a shot and he was out. Laurie saw the paramedics coming up the hill. “Oh, thank you, dear Lord!” As they got closer she began to tell her patients to keep very calm. Help was here and everyone would be moved out, but it would take time. “My name is Bill and this is Smitty.” “I’m Laurie, and I think these are some of the most serious cases. The captain and crew are over there at the edge. I didn’t know what to do for them except try to keep them warm.” So the evacuation began. As Laurie was helping to guide Mrs. Jones down the slope, she lost her balance and tumbled. One of the other Paramedics helped Laurie up and insisted she head down with him. “Where’s Commander Tucker? Did you get a chance to look at his arm?” Rogers said “You must by Laurie. You look as bad as he did. You two have done an unbelievable job here. How did you manage it?” “You do what you have to, and everybody helped.” Laurie felt like she was near tears. “Jim, take her with you. We’ll see you later.” With that the helicopter took off. She felt numb. How bright the moon was! It was like daylight. The forest below looked so dark. We never stopped to think there were probably bears or other wild animals near us, she mused. She wondered how Trip was doing. She still couldn’t believe what had happened. They will probably whisk him away when he gets to the hospital. Unconsciously, she stuck her hands in her pockets. She looked down to see what she hit. Trip’s cell phone. Trip had handed it to her to give John the details. She punched in his number and waited. “Jon here, who is this? Laurie?” “John, it’s Laurie. Have you heard from Trip? We’re on our way to the hospital. I think the Rangers got the paramedics. There must have been ten helicopters. Maybe the Army got involved, I don’t know. John, did you ever find Holli?” “Don’t worry, she’s fine. She’s staying here with us till you get back.” “Oh, John, thank you so much. I’ll do something nice for you when I can! “You already have. What’s with Tucker?” “I’m not sure. When I came down off the slope, he was gone. Lt. Rogers said he had sent him off to the hospital because of his arm and the fact that he looked exhausted. I’m about 10 minutes out; so I’ll call you as soon as I know. Thanks so much for your help. “BOMB! What Bomb? We haven’t heard a thing about a bomb!” “Keep it to yourself then. That’s what Trip told me earlier. We might never know for sure. Call you when I know more.” Lights were now visible on the ground. They circled and then landed near what looked like a small hospital. Nurses and doctors were waiting. Laurie said she could walk, but they wouldn’t let her. Wonder if they did this to Trip, too. They reached the emergency room, but by then the really seriously injured were arriving. She was put off to the side. She lay there for a few minutes, but then decided they would never miss her; so she went to look for Trip. She found him in one of the trauma rooms. His eyes were closed. He had been cleaned up and she could see all the scratches and cuts. He looks so much like a ‘little boy.’ I’m sure he would be horrified to hear that! She said “Trip’ a few times before he opened his eyes. “Laurie, where have you been? I kept asking, but nobody seemed to know. At first I saw a few people I remembered, but there have been so many I couldn’t see them clearly.” “How are you feeling now?” “I feel a little woozie from time to time. I don’t know if I’m dropping off or not. Do you know what time it is?” “It’s probably the middle of the night. I talked to John before I arrived. He has Holli with him. He said he had heard nothing about an explosion on the plane. Do you suppose somebody was really trying to blow the plane up or was it an accident?” A rap on the door and two Generals came in, one Air Force, one Army! “Commander Charles Tucker?” the Army asked. When Trip nodded, Air Force said, “We’d like to speak to you, in private.” “You can say whatever you have to say now. Laurie was there with me.” Army said, “You’re Laurie Layne….” “Yes,” she replied. “That will help a great deal.” They both nodded. “Please tell us all you can about what happened, in as much detail as possible.” It’s funny how you recall little things that you didn’t pay any attention to at the time they happened. Laurie remembered some man being so upset about having to say goodbye to his wife that he really got emotional. He seemed to be OK after they got in the air. Trip said, “Yeah, I remember that man. Some business men were so disgusted with him that they couldn’t wait to get by him, even making insulting remarks.” Laurie brought up the stewardesses. She said, “There were two when I boarded, one in Cabin Class and one in First Class. But after we were down, I remember another stewardess asking about the pilot. Trip spoke up and said he had remembered the woman going up to the cockpit while he was asking for help getting the injured pilot out because his foot had been caught under one of the pedals. That stewardess came back before Trip and his helper got there. Trip said, “Another thing, I remember how profusely the pilot had been bleeding when I returned. I don’t remember seeing that much blood before I left him. I looked for the stewardess to ask her to get some bandages, but I never saw her again.” He and Mr. Hardin had brought the pilot and co-pilot to the slide and the pilot was evacuated. The co-pilot had stayed to help Laurie. Trip said, “Come to think of it, the other two stewardesses earlier had their hands full helping the passengers - trying to calm them and keep them in their seats. But when it was time to evacuate the plane, they were both lying on the floor unconscious!” Laurie said she didn’t remember seeing the emotional man again, nor did Trip remember seeing the rude group again. The Generals exchanged knowing looks. Laurie and Trip said they couldn’t remember anything else on the plane or on the ground afterwards. Trip asked, “Do you know any of these people? Can you tell us about the bomb?” The Generals said we had been of great help to them, and if we thought of anything else, for us to call them right away. They never answered Trip’s question. About that time the noctor came in with a nurse and didn’t waste any time showing the generals out. They also wanted to know who Laurie was and what she was doing there! The nurse looked closer and said, “You’re the one we lost! I don’t have room for you now, but I’ll be back.” The doctor said Laurie should leave, but Trip insisted that she stay. That’s how she learned that Trip does have a birthmark on his side! TBC Have a comment to make about this story? Do so in the Trip Fan Fiction forum at the HoTBBS!
