CHAPTER 1

“Here are the Reports, Captain. All Departments are confirmed.”

“Thanks, Lieutenant. Looks like we’ll have smooth sailing to Andromeda! I plan to catch up on my reading tonight. How about you, T’Pol?”

“I look forward to making some comparisons of the readings I took when we passed through this Nebula on our last trip. There are some irregularities.”

“Well, I plan to spend some time at the movies! I heard we picked up some of the latest
ones,” Lieutenant Malcolm Reed put in.

“Captain, I’m picking up a distress signal, very faint!

“On screen. Magnify! Hoshi?”

“Too distant, Captain!”

“Travis, plot a course in the direction of the signal.”

“Hoshi, let me know when we are within range.”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Anything, T”Pol?”

“The image seems to be gone now! The signal is still active, though.”

“Hoshi, lets have a look.”

“Captain, the signal is coming from that debris field. It could be an escape pod,” said T”Pol.

As they moved closer, the dot got bigger. With magnification they could make out the pod.

“Can you get a lock on it, Malcolm?”

“Not yet, Sir. Just a little closer. Now!”

The jolt brought Trip on the intercom.

“Captain, what’s goin’ on?” Chief Engineer Charles “Trip” Tucker wanted to know.

“Meet us in Launch Bay 2, Trip.”

When they opened the pod, they found four very disoriented men, two appeared to be badly injured.

“Medical Emergency, Dr. Phlox!” shouted the Captain over the intercom.

Later, when Jonathan came by Sickbay, Dr. Phlox told him one of the men was critical, another in serious condition and the other two were responding to treatment and, in fact, he could talk to them.

“I’m Jonathan Archer, Captain of the USS Enterprise on which you are at the moment. Can you tell me what happened?”

“Our Core blew and caused a chain reaction,” the younger man said. “We ran for the pod. Don’t know what the rest of the crew did!”

The older man spoke up. “We had barely cleared the launch when she blew. We were thrown clear, but the pod is only made for two people. How bad is Doug? He was the last one in.”

Dr. Phlox lowered his eyes. “His condition is critical. His back was broken, he’s paralyzed.”

“The other man . . .”

“His name is Jim and this is Hugo, mine’s Tiberius.”

Dr. Phlox replied “Then, Jim, was badly burned before he reached the pod. He’s in serious condition, but I feel he will recover.”

“What is…was…the name of your Ship? What was she carrying and what was her destination?” Archer asked.

“We were headed for Andromeda with a cargo of dilithium,” Hugo said.

“We make this run every other month,” Tiberius put in. “We’ve never had core problems before!”

“What was the first thing that happened?” Archer wanted to know.

Tiberius spoke up.“We had a rising pressure reading and then some circuits started to blow; but the pressure didn’t level off. Then the back-up systems blew causing the fires. I’ve been an Engineer for twenty years. When the coolant lines rupture and the pressure hits critical, it’s time to ‘abandon ship!’ Jim had the Skipper on the intercom telling him what happened. The first explosion blew him against the pod. We dragged him in.”

The intercom came to life. “Captain?”

“Archer. Go ahead.”

“Captain, Malcolm here. We’ve done a sweep of the debris field. There are no life signs.”

“Understood, Malcolm”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Tiberius.”

“Kirk, Tiberius Kirk, Captain. They were good men. Someone caused that breach. It didn’t happen by itself. May I speak to you privately, Captain?”

“Of course,” Archer said as he motioned Kirk to follow him. “For the record, what Registry did you have?”

“We are, were, the Achernar out of Alpha Lyra, Captain; Andrew Logan, Commanding.”

“Come with me, Kirk. I need to notify the authorities. We’ll make another sweep of the field. Do you feel up to assisting my Crew? Commander Tucker will be in charge”.

“Thanks, Captain, I would like very much to help. We might find some pieces in tact that will shed some light on what caused the manifold to be blocked. I think someone closed the intake valve, but I can’t prove it!”

“What would they gain by this?” Archer asked. “They’d be killed in the process!”

“It could have happened when we were loading. I’ve caught them putting things on that aren’t on the manifest. Our boomer tells me it’s not my job and to get out!”

“Thanks, Kirk. Report to Commander Tucker.”

“Yes, Sir.
