Letter #2, February 10, 2152

We had some excitement over the past few days, and Enterprise’s warp 5 capability was tested for the first time. She did all right for a beginner. I just have to do some realigning to my engines and she’ll be purring along. Next time I’ll make sure her mettle isn’t tested during a crisis.

Recently I became acquainted with a very interesting Vulcan woman, an ambassador. Up to now, the only Vulcan female I’ve met is T’Pol, our science officer, and I’m not sure how representative she is. For example, unlike T’Pol the ambassador was charming and humorous. It’s hard to believe she’s a Vulcan. I got the feeling T’Pol hero worships the ambassador, but I’m sure she would deny it - I can hear her say Vulcans don’t venerate others. But it was pretty amusing to see T’Pol scurrying around, being a good hostess.

The Ambassador wasn’t like any Vulcan I had met before, except maybe for you. She had the predictable Vulcan mistrust and misperceptions about humans, but she did try to put us at our ease, to eat our food and even attempt the custom of shaking hands. In the end I think she did come to cautiously appreciate some human qualities. The other ambassador I have seen is Soval. Do you know him? He has no opinion of humans and makes that clear whenever he deigns to talk to any of us. He is so bitter and unhappy I wonder why he persists in staying on Earth, a place he despises as much as a logical Vulcan can despise anything.

Say, Kov, do you mind if I ask how old you are? The ambassador was involved with the Andorian/Vulcan peace accords over 90 years ago. I looked her up in the Vulcan database and found she had been born in the Earth year 1999. So was she a young woman 90 years ago? Middle age? She would have been in her 60s. It’s hard for me to grasp how long Vulcans live and how young they look. A human in her 60s would have looked about the age the Vulcan ambassador is now.

Remember telling me a bit about Vulcans mating practices? Believe it or not, uptight T’Pol actually discussed s-e-x at breakfast the other morning. She has decided the whole crew needs to get laid (except for her, of course) to improve productivity. She even found us a planet called Risa where we can get the action we need to become fully functional members of the Enterprise crew once more. Not that I’m objecting, but she does have the oddest ideas sometimes. I wonder what she has been reading in her spare time, or if she has been engaging in some field research of her own. She would think the latter course of action only logical, I’m sure. I did ask, but she neatly sidestepped the question by saying Vulcans mate every seven years (sounded damn proud of the fact, too). So, do Vulcans really have sex only once every seven years? Maybe I’ll suggest to T’Pol that she recommend a trip to Risa to Soval so that he can relieve his tensions and increase his productivity, and maybe improve his temper. Think that’s a plan?

I never really realized Vulcan doesn’t have a moon. You’ve never before been on a planet and seen moonlight? What an experience to have for the first time! I love a clear night with a full, bright moon illuminating the landscape and sea. Especially camping on the beach. There are lots of songs about the moon, its magic, and the dreams it can inspire: Blue Moon, Fly Me to the Moon, Moon River, Bad Moon Rising, and Moonlight in Vermont. Just a century and a half ago, the moon was so remote to humans, exotic and mysterious. Those times are gone now, but the songs captured some of that lost wonder.

Be sure to get out of the Vulcan compound whenever you can. Mill Valley isn’t too far from Sausalito. There’s a club Starfleet personnel frequent called the 602. Not too many Vulcans ever go there, but you might look in to see the place and observe humans at leisure. Think of it as an educational experience, not a trip to a bar. If a bartender named Ruby still works there, say hello for me, would you?

I hope your father’s next doctor’s appointment is more promising than the last.
More later.
