Letter # 6, August 20, 2152

Space continues to be mysterious and unexpected, with the crew having unforeseen effects on the environment and the environment having unforeseen effects on us. And then there are the slow times.

T’Pol and the Captain took off a few weeks ago to take care of a problem on a planet, leaving me to hold the fort. Actually, it could have been a great opportunity to kick back, relax, and socialize. But my so called good buddies, Malcolm and Phlox, decided to test my captaincy skills. Those two can be so annoying when they work at it. They give me headaches when they conspire to make my life a misery. Imagine, I had a delightful luncheon all set, and Phlox wants to discuss diarrhea and Malcolm wants me to take the warp engines offline so that he can do god knows what to his weapons. Phlox isn’t happy unless he has some disease invading the ship and Malcolm isn’t happy unless he is securing the perimeter. Why can’t they just watch a game of water polo and take it easy? By the way, there is a sport I haven’t suggested you see! Water polo! If you can go down to Stanford, which is south of San Francisco, take in a game and let me know what you think. I had never seen a game until I watched one with the Captain.

Despite the fact that Malcolm and Phlox are royal pains in the ass when they want to be, I may one day consider having a meal prepared for them again. I’ll just have to see if they deserve such care.

On a darker note, we lost a piece of equipment we had to retrieve from an inhabited planet, which brought us into contact with very suspicious members of a pre-warp society. I can see why Vulcans are so adamant about avoiding first contact with such cultures. There is no way to explain creatures from outer space without making things worse. This was an accident, but it gave us a fright because of the amount of damage such contacts can unintentionally do. And even worse, Vulcan protocols proved to be sound. I just hate that.

Right now the whole crew is recovering from close contact with a black hole, an encounter which could have caused extreme damage to us. Once the ordeal was over, we couldn’t remember what occurred because of the effects the radiation from the phenomenon had upon us. Except for T’Pol – she was probably in heaven because she got to examine tons of data about the effects the radiation had on humans. She took great joy in detailing everything I supposedly did during the time, even gloating when she said she knew something was wrong when I started acting odd, even for me. Now what the hell was that supposed to mean? Of course, the superior Vulcan physiology meant she was the only one who managed to keep it together and get us out of the situation. I’m not a competitive or a vindictive guy, but just once I’d like to see T’Pol at the mercy of the unknown and see how well she handles things when her Vulcan-ness is stripped from her. Fortunately, it sounds like everyone was a little crackers, not just me, so I’ll just pretend it was all in a day’s work and move on.

I’m glad you were able to meet with Admiral Forrest about working with Starfleet. Nothing like starting at the top when job searching, huh? However, I was happy to provide the introduction and ask him to discuss you working with Starfleet engineers. You have different experiences from humans and from the VHC and will bring in a new perspective. However, there is a lot of human resentment against Vulcans, and even though you think you can handle it, be prepared. I know it probably won’t faze you, and I know I’m assigning feelings to you I would experience in a hostile work environment, but I feel I should put you on your guard.

Will you ever return to Vulcan? It sounds like you are enjoying your time on Earth. Do you think about where you will settle down? T’Pol told me Vulcan parents arrange marriages for their children. Is this true for you?

Speaking of marriages, I can’t believe Ruby married someone who didn’t guess the names for her children. And she and her husband named the children after his parents?! I’m beginning to think Ruby was leading me up the garden path. Her intentions were never serious.

So glad your father has had such a dramatic improvement in his health. You must be pleased. The doctors did an excellent job. Earlier, I was teasing about Phlox and his obsession with disease - we are lucky his is so diligent. If he had been really concerned that day, he would never have come for lunch, and he would have set up a quarantine area. He takes precautions, and we have only benefited from his care and concern.

Later.

I have enjoyed the "Letters" immensely, myst! They provide a wonderful insight into our favorite engineer and his opinions about his crewmates. They also tell us what a good friend he is to Kov.

Keep up the great work! I can't wait to read about his feeling on what happened to his sister and about going into The Delphic Expanse.

I know how long it takes to write one of these, so it would be insensitive of me to ask you to hurry up with the next one. Oh well, I'll take insensitive over patience...please hurry with the next installent.

Loved this. I really did chuckle at Trip lamenting to Kov how Malcolm and Phlox had conspired to take some of the fun out of his opportunity to play Captain. It did not help that nothing went that smooth. Just goes to show that there is more to being Captain that relaxing back while the crew do all the work. Thanks again for a good outing, Ali D :~)
