Letter #1, late December 2151

Hey, Kov, glad to hear your dad is doing better. Yes, San Francisco is a beautiful city. I love that place, although the summer fog can be hard to take at times. And you discovered Peet’s coffee! Earth does offer many treats. Now that you are there, you will have to sample a few, and find out for yourself how wrong (and maybe, every blue moon, how right) Vulcans have been about humans.

Life on Enterprise continues to be surprising and intriguing. We recently encountered a father and daughter who had been marooned for some time on an uninhabited planet. They developed an ingenious way to survive, but in the process isolated themselves from reality, creating quite the little kingdom with the most obedient of subjects. I’d explain more, but Starfleet is classifying much of what we encounter. Suffice it to say, the daughter was one talented engineer, and loved ice cream. However, as attractive as she was, she wasn’t able to deal honestly with outsiders like me. She and her father had become so protective of each other they weren’t able to break out of their fantasy world to find a way back to their own planet. I hope, after our encounter, they will be willing to leave their oasis and rejoin society, but that may be too frightening and they may stay right where they are.

Speaking of fear, and changing a depressing line of thought for a more frivolous one, did you meet T’Pol, our Vulcan science officer, while on Enterprise? She tells me she doesn’t get frightened. Is that a Vulcan trait? I can’t imagine not being afraid under certain circumstances, and perhaps one day I will tell you the whole tale why I don’t believe she doesn’t experience fear. Sometimes I think she says things just to reinforce my perceptions of Vulcans as one-dimensional bores. Not you, of course, Kov! And I’m sure if I erred in judgment, you would let it go. Not so with T’Pol the Perfect, who must keep a tally sheet nearby at all times to mark down my supposed transgressions. Such a lovely Vulcan.

Enjoy The City and keep in touch.

Two folks have made comments

Irreverent, self-assured, yet untouched by the dark side. Excellent introduction to the early Trip. Will his further adventures change him? I look forward to the continuation.

I did love this letter. It would have been great to have had Kov's reply come after it as a counterpoint and an illustration of how their friendship continues despite being lightyears apart. Well done. This was great, Ali D :~)
