Summary: While helping a friend to the Romulan Border, Trip learns that his friend is a murderer. When Trip’s friend shoots Malcolm, Trip has to decide weather to kill his friend, or continue trying to set him free.

Chapter One

Trip sighed as he walked down the small platform away from the warp engines. He had walked up and down that thing all day, now his knees were killing him. Trip walked out of Engineering, his destination: His quarters, mainly the hot shower that awaited him in his quarters.

Trip stepped out from under the hot water. He dried himself off and slipped into a fresh, clean uniform. He sat down on his bed and picked up the picture. He gazed at the young woman, smiling at the camera. She was so beautiful, so young. But, Trip reminded himself, she was so dead. It had been four years to the day since the Xindi probe had been launched and his sister’s life cut short. Trip set the picture back up on the small stand and bent down and picked up his bag, stuffed full of clothes and food. He was going on vacation, or, so he had told his Captain, and his friend. Captain Jonathan Archer had granted Trip one month of vacation time, saying that Trip had more than earned it. What Trip was really doing was going to see a friend who wasn’t human, but who was in very deep trouble. Konon was a Romulan boy that Trip had rescued while on a camping trip with his friends. Now Konon was on the run, from planet to planet. Trip still couldn’t believe that Konon had a bounty on his head! Trip was going into Romulan territory and was going to see his friend Konon safely to the Romulan border. Normally Trip would have refrained from doing this but he had a debt to settle with Konon.

*Beep. Beep.*

It was his door buzzer.

“Com’ in.” He said. The door slid open, and Trip’s best friend Lt. Malcolm Reed stepped through.

“Just wanted to see you off. We just docked with the Talshier,” Malcolm explained. Trip nodded as he tied his shoes.

“How very thoughtful of ya Mal.” Trip looked up at his friend, who was looking down at the floor. Trip knew what Malcolm wanted. He wanted to go with Trip, have one more adventure together.

“I don’ know. Mal.”

“I already have permission from Jon.” Malcolm said simply.

Trip could tell Malcolm was itching to go, and threw up his hands as he stood. “Fine. Fine. Go git yer stuff an’ meet me in th’ shuttle.” Malcolm nodded and ran out of the room. Trip’s hair blew softly in the wind that Malcolm had created in his rush back to his quarters. Shaking his head as Trip grabbed his bag and, with one last look at his sister, he left his room.

Trip boarded the shuttle, with Malcolm a few steps behind. As Malcolm set his stuff down, Trip leaned over and whispered. “We’re goin’ ta do stuff ma way, Mal.” Malcolm looked back at his friend and saw that he was dead serious. Nodding, Malcolm said “Fine.” Trip flopped down into his seat as the shuttle left Enterprise and wondered if he made the right decision, about letting Malcolm come with him. Two guns were better than one, but Trip didn’t want his friend getting hurt in the battles to come, or, worse, getting killed.
