Chapter Six

Trip blinked as a light flashed. He shielded his eyes with his hand. After Trip dropped his arm, he realized two things. One, he was lying on something cold, and two, he was in his body in Sickbay! Trip groaned as he propped himself up. He turned as the doors opened to admit Jon and Dr. Phlox who looked up at him. For a second, they stared at each other, and then Jon and Phlox rushed to his side.

“I thought you were dead, Trip!” Jon exclaimed.

Trip had to smile at the remark.

“Does it look like I’m dead, Cap’n?” Trip asked sarcastically.

“How?” Phlox asked.

“I’m not really sure.”

Trip wasn’t ready to talk about what Konon had said to him. Maybe later he would talk to Jon or maybe even Malcolm, but, not now.

Trip waited as Phlox quickly scanned him and studied the results.

“It appears that the poison is gone from the commander’s body. I believe with two days rest he will be ready to return to duty.” Jon thanked the doctor with a nod and turned to face Trip.

“I just glad that your back with us Trip,” Jon said.

Trip could tell that Jon was trying to hold back his tears.

“I know, Capn’ I’m glad ta be back too.”

Jon helped Trip to his feet. Phlox started to protest.

“Doc, is it alright if I spend ma two days in ma quarters?” Trip asked.

“I suppose it will be alright.” Dr. Phlox said after a moment of consideration.

Phlox watched Trip hobble out of Sickbay.

Epilogue

Trip walked into Engineering to meet with a room full of claps and cheers. Trip couldn’t keep the smile off of his face. There was his whole team and the Armory crew. Jon and the rest of the senior staff were there also. They were all clapping and cheering. Trip walked up and shook hands with Jon, Malcolm and a few of the others.

After a moment Trip spoke. “Didn’t think I was missed this much!” Everyone laughed.

“Well, now you know,” Jon said.

Trip smiled again. “Thanks everyone for your concern.”

Everyone started to file out and return to their respective stations.

“Thank You, Capn.” Trip said.

“We’re just glad to have you back with us, Commander.”

Trip nodded. He thought suddenly of his friend and knew for a fact that Konon’s death was alright. Trip had never known that the drugs would do that. Stop. He told himself. Don’t start up with regrets again.

Trip looked up to find he was alone. He turned to his console and got to work.

Just because Konon died at a ripe young age, didn’t mean Trip had to. He reminded himself.

What this had tought him was to be careful, to enjoy things in life. Because you never know when it will go down hill. Trip smiled. Dr. Phlox had given Trip the liberty of killing the Rattlesnake Beetle. Trip had done so gladly. Trip had probably saved a few lives on the ship by doing that.

Trip looked down at a screen. It was a request from the bridge.

Warp 3.5.

Alright, Trip thought.

Time to get these babies crackin’.

Trip carefully fed fresh power to his Warp Engines.

Konon’s death had sure put things into perspective for Trip.

Trip hadn’t betrayed Konon….had he?

Naaa. Trip thought. He had done what any friend woulda done.

A mercy killing.

What Trip had done would haunt him.

Trip sighed and turned back to his station.

He read the report on the planet that Enterprise was heading towards.

Crashed ship, hostage situation. Promised to be adventurous.

Trip smiled. He needed something to brighten up his day.

He closed the screen and fed more power to his engines.
