Chapter Five

Trip stopped the shuttle, They were now past the Romulan border. Konon grabbed Trip and threw him against the wall.

“Guess I have no further need for you, You have been a thorn in my side for too long!”

Konon pointed the pistol at Trip. Trip gulped because the saying *your life flashes before your eyes* was true for Commander Tucker. Trip watched as Konon slowly squeezed the trigger, expecting at any moment to feel the burning pain of the blast and then fall into the nothingness that was death.

Suddenly the sensors beeped! Trip eyes flew open, automatically focusing on the sensors. He looked down to see a fairly big blip on the screen coming towards them at high warp. Trip scanned the ship and had to fight to keep the smile off of his face. It was Enterprise. He cleared the screen before Konon could see.

As Konon was leaning towards the screen, Trip acted. He grabbed the gun and yanked, but his friend was strong, Trip couldn’t get the gun free! Trip wrenched Konon’s wrist up so high that Konon screamed, nearly dropping the weapon. Konon gritted his teeth and curled up his free hand to punch Trip in the stomach, but Trip, expecting this, moved out of the way of the flying fist. His momentum threw him off balance making Konon instinctively fire, shooting the power mainframe. The whole place went dark, but, not before Trip was able to finally wrench the gun free. Trip knew they didn’t have much time because the life support hadn’t been on for ten minutes - Konon had turned it off to conserve power. Unfortunately now Trip couldn’t turn it on, even if he wanted to. He took a breath of the air.

“Five minutes of air left,” he said softly to himself. Hearing groans on the floor Trip spoke louder. “Ko, we hav’ Five minutes o’ air left.”

“I heard,” Konon grunted.

The musty air caused Trip to cough. He wondered what to do - no power meant no weapons, no weapons meant no communications.

Suddenly he felt the welcome sensation of the transporter! Trip watched as the darkness left and he found himself on the transporter pad, along with Konon. He noticed that they weren’t alone - Ensign Freeman was the one that had beamed them in.

The com crackled to life. “Ensign, you get them?” Captain Archer asked.

Before the young Ensign could respond, Konon launched himself towards his friend, attacking Trip full force! Trip tried to get the gun back, but he was knocked to the ground, the air leaving his lungs. Fighting back, Trip grabbed hold of the gun.

The two men scrambled around on the floor, rolling on top of each other. Trip started to get tired, his arms were shaking.

Konon felt Trip weaken although Trip fought on as best he could. Trip heard the door open but he was too preoccupied at the moment to notice who it was. Ensign Freeman stood by as Captain Archer and Lieutenant Reed rushed into the room.

They watched as Commander Tucker and Konon rolled over on top of each other.

Malcolm drew his pistol. Jon saw what Malcolm was about to do and made him lower the gun.

“No, you might hit Trip.” Captain Archer said

All three jumped as the pistol Trip and Konon were fighting over went off. Their eyes turned to the two men who were lying as they were. Konon was on top of Trip, both very still. Jon and Malcolm held there breath, waiting for one of them to move.

***

Trip saw the dead gaze of his former friend, looking at him and knew it was over. He was so tired, and glad to be back home, or at least his home away from home. Trip carefully rolled Konon's dead form off of himself and tried to stand. Jon and Malcolm who had been watching, rushed to his side trying to help him up.

Trip grimaced as pain shot through his arm and leg.

“Are you alright, Trip?” Jon asked.

Trip shook his head and tripped over his own feet. Malcolm crouched down next to his friend as Jonathan called Dr. Phlox to the transporter room.

Two minutes later Dr. Phlox entered with an aide who rolled in a gurney. Dr. Phlox quickly scanned Trip then had Jon help him onto the gurney.

“Let’s get the Commander to sickbay.” Dr. Phlox said.

***

Malcolm watched his friend sleep. It had been a close call. Trip had been suffering from malnutrition and lack of sleep for a very long time. Dr. Phlox was amazed that Trip hadn’t collapsed sooner. After seeing Trip to Sickbay, Malcolm helped Jon put Konon’s body in stasis.

“Mal?”

Malcolm’s eyes looked down to see Trip looking back up at him.

“Trip!”

Malcolm waved Dr. Phlox over.

“Well Commander, You gave everyone here quite the preverbal scare!”

Trip nodded. “Nice ta be appreciated doc.”

“Your bio-signs seemed to be returning to normal. You should be fit to return to duty in a week.”

“A week?” Trip moaned.

“We don’t want to take any chances with your malnutrition now do we?” Dr. Phlox asked.

Trip felt like saying “yes” but thought better of it. “But why a whole bloomin’ week doc?”

“Please don’t make me stretch it out to two weeks Commander.” Dr. Phlox asked in his “I will do it” tone.

“Alright, Doc, I get the point.” Trip said.

Dr. Phlox turned to Malcolm. “Which reminds me, Lieutenant, It is time for your yearly physical.”

“Couldn’t we do that some other time?”

“Lieutenant, You have been as you say it ‘putting it off’ for two months now.”

“I have to do some diagnostic’s on the weapon’s first, doc.” Malcolm lied.

Dr. Phlox wasn’t buying it. “Lieutenant, please don’t make me confine you to sickbay.”

Malcolm glared at the doctor. “You wouldn’t dare.”

Dr. Phlox smiled at the lieutenant. “Just watch me.”

Dr. Phlox promptly sealed the door to sickbay, then punched up Lieutenant Reed’s status on his screen. He made some adjustments to it. Now his status read "Confined to Sickbay."

From his bio-bed. Trip was laughing and was trying to hard to cover it up. Malcolm glared at him with that totally British face of his, which made Trip laugh even harder! Trip then choked out. “Sorry Mal!”

Dr. Phlox turned towards them. “Lieutenant, the sooner we do the physical the sooner you can return to duty.”

Malcolm finally gave in and hopped onto a vacant bio-bed. “Alright fine, Let’s get this over with.”

As Dr. Phlox did the physical, he and Malcolm were acutely aware of Commander Tucker still laughing from his bio-bed.

THE END!
