Chapter Four

Travis eased himself up off the floor. He quickly brushed off the flakes of dirt and dust that had settled on his blue and gold uniform, then checked his board. The controls were off-line.

“Travis, you alright?” Jon asked.

Travis turned around and nodded. “Yes, sir. I’m fine.”

They all turned to the turbo lift and watched as first Hoshi, then Dr. Phlox, came up. Dr. Phlox went immediately to T’Pol and scanned her. He then looked up.

“She’s dead, Captain,” Phlox said.

“No, she can’t be!” Jon said.

“She has been dead for approximately ten minutes,” Phlox continued.

Phlox moved on to Travis who was rubbing his arm.

Travis stood still as Phlox scanned him.

“You have a broken arm, Ensign,” he said.

“Is that all?” Travis asked.

“And two broken ribs,” Phlox went on.

Phlox moved on to Malcolm who was clutching his chest.

“My, my, Lieutenant, accident prone, aren’t we?” Phlox asked as he scanned him. Phlox looked at the results and frowned.

“We need to get you and Ensign Mayweather to sickbay immediately!” Phlox said.

“What’s wrong, doc?” Trip asked, approaching them.

“Lieutenant Reed has five broken ribs and is bleeding internally,” Phlox said.

Trip grabbed Malcolm and helped support him.

“There is no way he can make the climb down to sickbay,” Jon said.

“Someone will have to carry him then,” Phlox said.

Trip suppressed a chuckle, trying to imagine the look on Malcolm’s face.

“That won’t be necessary doctor. I can manage,” Malcolm said.

“Commander Tucker, would you kindly escort Lieutenant Reed to sickbay?” Phlox asked.

“Sure.” Trip said, picking up Malcolm and hoisting him over his shoulder.

About halfway through the climb, Malcolm said, “Commander, I’m sure this is a bad time to say this, but, I can’t breath.”

Trip knew that Malcolm’s stomach was pressing fairly hard against Trip’s shoulder.

“We’re almost there.”

They continued.

Trip soon could hear Malcolm start to wheeze.

Finally they reached D deck and Trip laid Malcolm out on the deck. Malcolm took in several deep breaths. Trip grabbed Malcolm’s arm and got him to his feet and took him to Sickbay. Once there, Trip’s communicator beeped. Trip took it out and flipped it on.

“Tucker, go ahead.”

“Trip, get down to Engineering. There’s something wrong with the engines.”

Trip nodded. “On ma way.”
