Chapter Eight

“You did what?!” Jon and Trip asked Ensign Ryan in unison.

“I forgot to turn off the power to the console.” Ensign Ryan answered sheepishly.

“That’ll get ya every time, Ensign!” Trip replied.

“What made you forget to turn off the power?” Jon asked.

“I…,” Ensign Ryan paused. “It was a stupid mistake. It won’t happen again, sir.”

“Your darn right it won’t!” Jon said. After a minute he took a deep breath and calmed down.

“Ensign Ryan your dismissed.” Jon ordered. The man left the ready room.

“Trip I want you and Lieutenant Reed to suit up and check out Engineering. See what kind of damage it has sustained.”

“Aye, sir.” Trip replied.

Thirty minutes later Trip and Malcolm were suited up and on their way. They arrived on a depressurized F-Deck and made there way as quickly as they could to Engineering, or what was left of it.

“The door is jammed.” Malcolm said to Trip through the com channel.

Trip tried to open the door but Malcolm was right. It was jammed. He grabbed his small plasma torch and took the door off that way. Once the door was off, it was clear as to why they couldn’t move it. There was the big engine blocking there way. There was a small hole, big enough for them to get through but only one at a time. Malcolm crawled through first and got his oxygen hose caught between some debris. The hose popped out of his helmet. Reed dropped to the ground, gasping for breath.

Trip came next and saw the whole scene unfold. He knelt down next to Malcolm and quickly reinserted the hose back into his helmet. Malcolm nodded his thanks weakly as he fought to catch his breath. After two minutes he stood up with Trip’s help, he wobbled a little as he stood.

“I’m alright.”

Trip then took his first look at what was left of Engineering. Actually to Trip, Engineering was the wrong word, battle zone was more like it.

“Was this actually Engineering?” Malcolm asked as he also surveyed the place.

“Yeah,” Trip answered. The whole place was a mess. It didn’t need repaired, the room needed to be ripped apart and replaced. Malcolm and Trip moved to the walls.

“There’s some serious damage here, we’re going to need to place these patches quickly or there’s going to be…,” Malcolm began. Then suddenly there was a noise.

They turned.

“HULL BREACH!!!!!!!!!” Trip yelled as he grabbed onto the ladder that still partly hung to the mess that used to be the upper deck.

Malcolm wasn’t so lucky. He went flying towards the small hole. Trip watched helplessly as his friend disappeared through the hole, then felt gravity returning. He managed to make it over to the hole and patch it.

Hopefully Malcolm survived, he had been wearing his suit, Trip thought. He moved as quickly as possible and sealed up all of the other possible tears in the hull before going back to the bridge.
