Chapter One

Trip Tucker slowly drank his hot coffee as he mulled over the morning reports. It was all the same.

“Computer, time?” Trip asked.

The computer responded. “The time is 0900 hours.”

Trip sighed as he downed the rest of his glass.

He had two hours left before he took a shuttle out to study some comet.

T’Pol had requested that Enterprise stop to study the comet weeks in advance.

Of course Jon had to say yes.

Jon had further elected Trip as the sole occupant of the shuttle. T’Pol had objected, but Jon had held firm.

It was either that, or Enterprise wasn’t stopping. Reluctantly T’Pol agreed.

Trip loved when Jon bossed T’Pol around.

Tucker looked up as a shadow fell over him. It was T’Pol, with hands behind her back.

“What can I do for ya, T’Pol?” Trip asked, knowing full well what she was about to ask.

“I request permission to accompany you on the shuttle,” T’Pol stated.

Trip shook his head. “Sorry, no can do. T’Pol. Capn’s orders,” he told her.

As he studied her profile he could see the disappointment register in her eyes.

T’Pol bowed to show him courtesy, then promptly marched off.

Am I good our what? Two people mad at me, within ten minuets of each other. That’s a new record, he thought

Malcolm had asked him earlier, but Trip had turned him down as well. Trip had seen the steam rising from his friends head as Malcolm and walked off.

Suddenly the companel beeped.

“Captain Archer to Commander Tucker.” Jon’s voice filtered through the speakers.

Trip crossed to the panel.

“Tucker here. Go ‘head Capn’.”

“Trip. Report to the bridge immediately. Some problems have come up,” Jon ordered.

“On my way.” Trip said.

He punched the button which closed the channel and went out of the Mess Hall and headed for the turbolift.

What now? he thought.

Chapter Two

Trip Tucker walked into Jon’s small ready room and stood at attention, waiting for Jon to speak.

Jon looked up from his small monitor.

“Trip. There has been a slight problem with your mission,” Jon began.

“What happened, sir?” Trip asked in his southern accent.

“The comet is missing,” Jon said simply.

“Come again?” Trip asked.

Before Jon could reply, T’Pol’s voice came through the com. “Captain Archer.”

Jon punched the button to open the channel. “Go ahead.”

“We have located the comet.”

“Where is it? Get us on an intercept course,” Jon ordered.

“We can not do that.”

“Why not?” Jon asked.

“Because the comet is heading straight for us,” T’Pol said in her cool tone.

Jon leapt off his chair so fast that Trip thought he would have hit the ceiling.

Trip followed Jon out of the ready room and onto the bridge. There on the view screen was the comet, heading towards them.

“When it passes, Trip, you take the shuttle get those scans and get back here,” Jon said.

“Aye, Capn’.”

From Sensors T’Pol informed him, “The comet will pass into a dense pocket of neural gases. It is likely that you will lose contact with Enterprise before you can catch up to the comet.”

“It’s your choice,” Jon said.

Go or stay? Trip thought. He was the adventurous type. Go.

“I’ll go, sir. Back in a flash, Capn’.”

He turned and headed for the docking bay.
