Chapter Three

Trip helped Malcolm unload the cart in silence.

Only after all of the debris was put on the shelves did Trip speak. “Think this stuff could have a viral contaminant?” he asked.

Malcolm shook his head. “From the scans I took, I doubt it, but still, it’s quite possible.”

“You’re not very encouraging, are ya?”

“You asked me! I gave you my honest opinion,” Malcolm countered.

Trip and Malcolm walked out of the storage room, and Malcolm turned and sealed it.

“I’m going to sickbay to check on Ensign Holmes.” Malcolm said.

“I’ll come with ya.” Trip said.

~~~~
Trip and Malcolm entered Sickbay to see Dr. Phlox inject the unconscious ensign with something.
Phlox turned to see them. “Ah, Commander, Lieutenant.”
“How’s he doing?” Trip asked.
“Not good.” Phlox answered.
“Whatever acid is on his skin simply will not come off. I have run a varity of tests on him. None seem to be affective. Young Ensign Holmes is simply being ‘eaten alive,’ as your Earth saying goes,” Phlox continued.
“And we still can’t touch him?” Malcolm asked.
“Correct,” Phlox said.
“And we’re sure this is an acid?” Trip asked.
“Yes, apparently from what I can tell it was man made, other than that…,” he stopped.
“We’re going to have to start an investigation. Find out who made it,” Trip said.
“Precisely what I was thinking,” Malcolm said.
Trip and Malcolm turned to leave when Ensign Holmes started yelling.
His eyes flashed open and he leapt up, clawing at his skin.
“IT BURNS, IT BURNS!” he screamed over and over.
The young ensign jumped off the bed and started running.
Out of pure instinct Malcolm grabbed the young ensign, pinning him in place.
Phlox grabbed a hypo and sedated Holmes.
Malcolm then released Holmes.
Phlox returned the Ensign to the table.
Trip looked at Malcolm in disbelief.
Malcolm’s jaw quivered and then Malcolm let out a deafening scream.
He flailed his hand in the air.
“IT HURTS!” he yelled.
Phlox quickly led Malcolm over to a tray of cold ice.
“This will cause the pain to subside for an hour, but the acid is still there,” Phlox explained.
Suddenly Malcolm’s uniform started to smoke.
“Oh my,” Phlox said.
Trip turned and left Sickbay just as Malcolm let out another horrifying scream.
Trip headed up to the bridge.
He had to report to the captain. STAT.
