Chapter Five

Trip arrived on Deck 4 and went to Science. He found Mr. Smith at his station working.

There were equations on the screen, equations that Trip didn’t recognize.

“Mr. Smith.” Trip said.

The young man jumped, keying in a code. The screen went blank as the young man swiveled in his chair to face Trip.

“Commander! What brings you down here?” Smith asked.

“I was wonderin’ Ensign. Do you know anything about this?” Trip asked, holding up a small container with a small piece of the debris inside it.

Smith grew a little pale, then calmed himself. “No sir. Should I?”

“Records say that you were the one who created this,” Trip said.

“The Starfleet records are wrong,” Smith said angrily.

“I didn’t get the information from the Starfleet records. I got them from the Vulcan records,” Trip countered.

Smith started to sweat. “They must be wrong,” he stammered.

“I don’t think so. The acid that you made, hurt one of my friends, and your gonna pay!” Trip said angrily.

Smith reached behind him and withdrew a phase pistol and pointed it at Trip.

“I don’t think so, Commander. I never intended for the acid to be that strong. And I never intended for anyone to get hurt,” Smith said as he led Trip away.

“Save it,” Trip said.

Smith led Trip behind the consoles of the Science stations into a small dark crevice.

“It will take days for anyone to find you Commander, and by that time I’ll be long gone.”

“Don’t do this Jerod.”

“Too late.” Jerod pulled the trigger and the stun blast hit Trip full in the stomach. Trip slumped forward, unconscious.

Jerod picked Trip’s body up and slid it into the alcove. “Good bye, Commander.” He lay the pistol on Trip’s chest, after switching it to the stun setting, and then left Science heading for the Launch Bay.
