Chapter Nine

Jon and Trip went back to Sickbay together. Once they entered, they saw a body, covered by a thin sheet.

Trip wiped some tears out of his eyes as he approached the form of his dead friend.

He lifted the cover and looked down.

Malcolm’s face was covered in dried blood. His left arm was nearly non existent.

Trip lay the cover back over his friend’s face as Dr. Phlox came in.

“Lieutenant Reed’s body is free of the acid, but he paid the price,” Phlox said.

“Did he say anything before he…,” Trip said.

“No. He was unconscious at the time.”

Suddenly the com sounded again. “Lieutenant Paris to Captain Archer,” Jim Paris said.

Archer punched the channel open.

“Sickbay, Archer here.”

“Sir, the floor to Launch Bay 1 is ready to collapse!” Jim replied.

“On my way,” Jon said

~~~~~~
Jon made his way to the Launch Bay, meeting Lee out in the corridor.
“Captain. I have the antidote!” Lee said.
He handed Jon the pad.
“Snimba…what?” Jon asked, reading the pad.
“Nimjatril,” Lee answered.
“It’s a restoring agent. It will repair the floor to the launch bay.” Lee said.
“What about Lieutenant Reed and Ensign Holmes?” Jon asked.
“Not sure.” Lee answered.
Jon and Lee ran the rest of the way to the Launch Bay.
~~~~

They entered the launch bay quickly.

“Lieutenant Paris!” Jon called.

“Yes, sir?” Paris said.

Jon reached into a box and handed Jim a container.

“Spread this on the floor. Now!” Jon ordered.

Jim took the container and opened it up, sprinkling some of the black contents on the floor.

When the nimjatril hit, the acid disappeared and the floor returned to normal.

Jon took another canister and went back to sickbay with it.

Once there he handed it to the doctor.

“What’s this?” Phlox asked.

“Inject this into Lieutenant Reed and Ensign Holmes,” Jon said.

Trip who had stayed in Sickbay, walked over to Jon.

“What is it?” he asked.

“Hopefully our savior,” Jon answered.

Phlox injected Ensign Holmes first.

After a few moments Phlox scanned him. “Nothing, Captain. No respiratory function.”

He then moved to Malcolm and injected him as well.

After a few moments, Phlox scanned Malcolm as well. This time he smiled.

“I have a pulse!” Phlox called.

Phlox hooked Malcolm back up to the monitors.

Jon, Trip, and Phlox watched as the monitors showed Malcolm’s vital signs returning to normal.

Trip walked and took the sheet off his friend.

Malcolm’s face was healing itself, and the Lieutenant’s arm was healed completely!

Then Malcolm opened his eyes. “Trip.”

“Hey, don’t ever do that to me again!” Trip said jokingly.

“Do what?” Malcolm asked.

Before Trip could answer, Jon approached, along with Phlox.

“Well, Lieutenant, glad to see you returning to normal,” Jon said.

“Indeed,” Malcolm agreed, “I feel a hundred times better.”

Phlox scanned him.

“He is perfectly healthy, Captain,” Phlox said.

Trip watched as Jon and Malcolm talked.

Trip turned around and headed for the brig.
