Chapter Five

Trip sat by Xerion’s side as Dr. Phlox gave his report to Jon and Trip.

“She is dying. Her body’s cellular structure is decaying rapidly. In short, Xerion will die if she remains here,” Phlox said.

“How long does she have?” Jon asked.

“Two days, three if we’re lucky,” Phlox answered.

Jon approached Trip. “I’m sorry, Trip.”

Trip nodded.

“I have to send her back,” he said.

Jon nodded his head. “It appears so.”

The companel sounded.

“Bridge to Captain Archer,” Lieutenant Malcolm Reed said. Jon punched the button.

“ Sickbay, Archer here.”

“Captain. The anomaly’s entrance just collapsed,” Malcolm stated.

“What? How?” Jon asked.

“I’m not sure, it was stable and then it was gone,” Malcolm replied.

Jon looked back at Trip as they both took in the news.

Trip turned back to his wife and cried.

Trip held Xerion’s hand as she woke.

“Trip?” she whispered softly.

“I’m right here.”

“What happened?” she asked.

“The reason you fainted,” Trip choked out, “your body is shutting down. You were never meant to exist in this world.”

“I will be alright won’t I?” she asked.

Trip shook his head. “There is no way to reverse it.”

“Send me back to my planet.”

“I can’t. The entrance to the anomaly is gone,” Trip replied.

“So, I’m going to die?” she asked.

Trip couldn’t speak so he just nodded his head.

“I am so sorry.” He said as he buried his head into her shoulder sobbing.

“If I’m going to die, I want to spend all my time with you, my love.”

Trip raised his head. He was still crying but there was a hint of a smile on his face.

“I love you,” he whispered into her ear.

“I love you too,” she replied.

She and Trip kissed.
