Summary: War affects all of us, but more so those that are left behind. • * * * * * * * * Jon sometimes joined him on these evenings, also suffering from insomnia and from having the weight of the world on his shoulders. Enterprise was in an area of space known as the Delta Expanse. Their mission here was to save mankind from extinction by a race called the Xindi, who had just killed seven million humans for no apparent reason. Trip thought about earth's own history and all the wars that had been fought by mankind against itself. He wondered how many people even thought about how the death of each soldier affected others. Those they left behind were the ones affected the most. For each soldier could be someone's husband or wife, father or mother, son or daughter, brother or . . . sister. His own sister had been killed in this new war and it just wasn't right. If anyone should have died, it should have been me. I‘m the Starfleet officer; Liz was just an innocent civilian. It was all wrong; the Xindi said they were attacking earth now because of what happens 400 hundred years in the future, but maybe they were attacked by earth because of what the Xindi did in the past! It didn’t make any sense! How he wished Daniels were here, maybe he could make it better by going back in time and stopping it all from happening. Then Trip could have his sister back and seven million other people could have their lives back as well. Thinking about all this made his head hurt. A tension headache from lack of sleep and food was starting to throb in his head. I’m so tired, just wish it would end. The alcohol wasn't having any effect on him, not even a buzz. Even though the bourbon bottle in front of him was half full, Trip didn't want to drink anymore. He had to be up in the morning ready to go and able to function. There were almost 100 people on this ship counting on him to keep Enterprise running, and his best friend Captain Archer would expect it as well. He rubbed his eyes with his hand and decided that maybe he should go back to his quarters and try to get some rest. It was always there, the memories of his sister from childhood, and the knowledge that he would never see her again. The hurt had gone from a sharp pain to a dull ache in the weeks since it all happened. Everyone had tried to help him, but it wasn't going to go away that easily. It would take time and he knew it, but it still didn’t stop the pain. The Vulcan's had warned them of the possible effect on their people from the Expanse. Trip wondered if his crew would all go crazy and try to kill each other like the Vulcans had. There was also the question eating at his insides, what kind of revenge was he going to be capable of? Certainly not the slaughter of innocent Xindis who had nothing to do with the attack on earth. If you stooped to killing innocent Xindis then you were nothing more than a murdering terrorist, not a soldier fighting for a reason. Trip decided then and there he wouldn't allow himself to become the former. His sister wouldn’t want that. However, he would defend earth from the attackers, that he was sure of. It would be a hard road ahead for all of them, even the young soldiers on board, for he doubted that any of them had ever been in combat, let alone killed someone. Trip didn't envy them at all. He took the last swallow from his glass and picking up the bottle started to leave the mess hall. Tomorrow was another day and maybe tomorrow they would find the answers as to why this all happened. Maybe tomorrow he’d wake up and find out . . . It was all a bad dream . . . ************* Looking for a sequel? Try Midnight Retribution. Have a comment to make about this story? Do so in the Trip Fan Fiction forum at the HoTBBS! One person has made commentsLovely little vignette of Trip, his thoughts are just so believable and I love the way he is rationalising that when he does take his revenge it will not be on any innocent Xindi. Not sure how he is going to qualify that unless he is mentally equating innocent Xindi with civilian targets as opposed to the military attack probe that cut the swathe through Earth. Thank you for a good story, Ali D :~) |
