Letter # 7, September 15, 2152

So you are engaged, even after no contact with your father for over 10 years? Do you mind me asking you about that custom of arranged marriages? Why do Vulcans marry at all? You don’t have wealth to pass along, so it doesn’t seem to be about inheritance. Legitimacy? If no emotion is involved, why tie two people together for over a hundred or a hundred and fifty years? I’m not criticizing. I really am interested why marriage exists and what role it plays in Vulcan society.

Are you going to marry T’Nel soon? Tell me about her. If you are 57, at what age do Vulcans normally marry? Is it late in the game for you, or are you on track?

I do hope to marry one day, and to have children. I did have an odd experience a few months before I met you, when I became “pregnant.” During a very innocent encounter, I accidentally got impregnated by a Xyrillian woman. The males of that species carry the child, but are the host, not the biological parent. Ah’Len (the Xyrillian woman) and I, without my knowledge, shared space which resulted in my condition. Others may harbor suspicions about my actions, but I can state with absolute truth that I, at all times, acted as a perfect gentleman. In the end, Ah’Len was able to transfer the embryo to another host, but I still wonder about that baby.

I did meet an amazing woman recently, a princess no less! We really hit it off. Although we initially skirmished, we soon learned to communicate very well. She seemed to like all the same things I do, and she was very brave and strong. Beautiful, too. But she had a kingdom (or something) to go rule, so our relationship was intense but brief.

Tell me, if you have been engaged from birth, practically, what do you do when you meet an attractive woman? Ignore her? Or don’t you notice her beauty?

I’m glad the project you are working on is rewarding, and that your colleagues are treating you well. I was very surprised you think I am hostile towards T’Pol. I’ll admit I was a little suspicious of her story about the Vulcans on earth in the 1950s, and I did feel she had a little too much fun at my expense over the black hole incident, but we have learned to work well together. Her grasp of science is amazing, and she can be very helpful when I’m trying new techniques in engineering. She is more than happy to volunteer her free time to brainstorm about projects and find solutions to puzzling problems. I do sometimes think she judges me and finds me wanting. She thinks I’m always trying to seduce every woman I meet, which I’m not. But she does seem to accept our human emotions and allow us our foibles. In fact, I sometimes wonder if something is wrong because she doesn’t seem to have the energy she did a year ago. If she were human, I’d wonder if she was depressed. I was stunned one day when she praised my engineering skills in front of others – it seemed so un-Vulcan of her. Hmm, maybe there is something wrong with her.

Malcolm and Phlox are both well, and yes I will tell them hello for you. I love those guys – they make me laugh and make me think. Malcolm was very envious of my time with the princess, as you probably guessed. Captain Archer has seemed preoccupied recently, but when we can we shoot the breeze over a cold one. I’m still enjoying our expedition immensely, and am grateful I have made such good friends in the process.

Say hello to your father, and tell him I’m glad he is better.

No cultural outings recently?

Later. Take care.

Trip

AN #1: Any ideas why Vulcans would marry? Is marriage logical?

AN #2: Please, someone, give me the title of a good movie which has some reference to or something to do with the moon! Help!

Thanks!

Myst, another great letter. Thank you.

As for Vulcan marriage. It is logical in light of Pon Far, in my opinion. Having the details in place reduces the stress. Just imagine the chaos if a Vulcan male didn't have his partner chosen when he enters Pon Far?

How about, "A Walk on the Moon" for a movie title - Viggo and Diane Lane?

I love the letter series. They are so Trip! For a movie suggestion, how about Moonstruck. It would be so approprite to go along with Trip's questions about arranged marriages. If you've seen the movie, you will know what I mean. If you haven't seen it, it stars Cher and Nicholas Cage.

Loved this, you really have Trip's character captured in this series and I did chuckle at him trying to redress the balance in showing Kov that he is not actually hostile towards T'Pol. As for marriage I think it is logical to bond Vulcans in prearranged marriages not only to deal with the fallout of Pon Farr but to ensure the continuation of the species. As for suitable movies it depends on how sappy you want to get. For pure sugar quotient you can't go better than the old Gordon MacRae and Doris Day outings "On Moonlight Bay" and "By The Light of the Silvery Moon". They are so filled with the *feel good* factor for me and bearing in mind what a softie Trip can be at the movies I can just see him getting all sappy over them. Whatever you choose to go with I am sure you will do a wonderful job integrating it into your story. Thanks, Ali D :~)
