Letter # 9, end of November, 2152

It’s been a crash course on Vulcan logic for the Enterprise crew these past few weeks.

I know the news of the Vulcan/Andorian peace talks reached Earth. Our very own Soval was there to try to screw things up in his own special way, but managed to prevent disaster in spite of himself. What a piece of work that man is.

Kov, my bud, explain to me why, after centuries, the Vulcans and Andorians are still at each other’s throats? How is that kind of animosity logical to the Vulcans? I say this because I have come to know individuals I consider copasetic. You and T’Pol are two Vulcans I feel I can say are not bound by historic prejudices. T’Pol has managed to live on a human ship and become part of the community here for over a year. You are living and working in San Francisco, part of a team of humans. You were both raised to view humans as inferior, but you have adjusted that perception.

Yet T’Pol retains, at least to me, archaic views of Andorians as predators and deceitful. And she has met Andorians! Have you? A less predatory species than the Andorians I have yet to meet. I sometimes wonder how they, with their angst and melodrama, make it through breakfast on a daily basis without crying and without tearing out their collective hair. The Andorians not a threat to anyone, except themselves. What is the story with Vulcan judgment against the Andos? Vulcans may consider humans the dimmest creatures alive, but we are not held under the microscope of suspicion the way the Andorians are. Why is this species which, in human terms, acts like hormonal-driven teen-agers, treated like the villains of the universe? Trust me on this Kov. Go talk to any, I mean ANY, human who has just given birth or has a child 12 years old – you will be told by the former “I have 12 years till my baby discovers I’m the dumbest thing ever born” and the latter “it will all be over in 6 years and then I will again be worthy of rejoining the human race.” I’m telling you, Andorians are the teens of the galaxy and Vulcans the clueless parents. Vulcans need to get a grip and realize that not everyone is born 150 years old – some species are born and never get past the age of a fourteen-year-old human.

Enough of that soap box and on to a theoretical equivalent. Why are Vulcans so convinced time travel doesn’t exist? I ask because T’Pol is adamant it isn’t possible. She won’t even open her mind to discussing the possibility. It is as though some Vulcan gene reads “Andorians are evil and time travel is absurd” (always assuming a Vulcan could bring him or herself to incorporate the word 'absurdity' into the lexicon).

Now I’m not interested in time travel. I have no desire to know what the future holds. If I were one of those early 21st century “internet posters,” I would avoid the “spoilers” of upcoming movies at all costs. I want to experience life, and entertainment, as it comes, not see it through a lens of someone else’s construction. But for those who want to know how the book ends, and the future has been bound and put on the shelf to peruse, why shouldn’t they, as long as they put the word spoilers prominently in any discussion?! Have you ever read discussions containing spoilers? Seldom does the reality match the hype. It is like a Boolean keyword search. For example, say Malcolm wants to know who he will marry. He searches for “marriage” and “reed” and finds material on the use of reed mats in marriage ceremonies. Both words are present but they don’t have any relationship to each other in the sense sought by the one who asks. The reality seldom matches the interpretation of the words of the oracle of Delphi. All the speculation in the world isn’t going to allow someone to accurately know the future. But why can’t those who wish to know see a glimpse and speculate? What is the harm?

I seem to be on a rampage here, but will shift gears. Thanks for your feedback on the movie “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.” I won’t suggest that for movie night. For crying out loud, Kov, it was a Western! I can’t believe you wrote me pages about the symbolism in the movie depicting the demise of the United States West in the late 19th century, that we were witnessing the character of John Wayne circling the territory and bidding farewell to the past. It was a Western! I’m thinking of showing Frankenstein instead as a movie to get aliens interested in film and the communal experience of watching movies together. Maybe a little popcorn. Dinner. Yes. I’m sure Phlox, an alien interested in human culture, would enjoy the entire experience. Thanks for your feedback on the Western, but it is clear something is needed which is more along the lines of pure entertainment, with an element of science thrown in to pique the interest of the audience.

Later!

Two folks have made comments

Made me smile again. And that's a good thing. Thanks Myst.

Loved this, I chuckled out loud at the notion of Kov writing pages about the significance of "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon". I really can hear Trip's voice in these letters and the way he just signs off 'later' sounds like something he would do too. Thank you for an excellent series of letters. Ali D :~)
