Chapter One

Trip sighed as he mulled over his reports. He had learned two hours ago that the prisoner Jerod Smith had been transferred to Earth safely.

He cleared his throat as his friend Malcolm Reed, now completely healed from his wounds, approached the table.

“What are you working on, Commander?” Malcolm asked.

“Oh, nothin’ much. Just a couple of reports,” Trip replied.

“That can be really fun, sometimes,” Malcolm said.

“Your joking, right?”

“You know I am.”

“Aren’t you supposed to be on duty right now?” Trip asked.

“The Captain sent me to get you. Enterprise has received a distress call from a planet two systems over. We’re proceeding over there now.”

“What’s the problem?”

“We’re not sure. They wouldn’t say,” Malcolm replied.

“Why didn’t the capn’ signal me with the com?” Trip asked.

“It’s still off-line.”

Trip smacked his head.

He had taken the com system off-line earlier to repair some of its functions. He had completely forgotten about it!

That wasn’t like him to forget something like that. He must have been more tired than he thought.

“Thanks for the head’s up, Malcolm. I’m headin ta Engineerin’ to finish the repairs on the com system,” Trip said, getting up from the table.

“The captain will be waiting for you there,” Malcolm said, also getting up.

“Right,” Trip replied. “Why?”

“He needs to talk to you.”

“Great, what’d I do now?”

“Nothing that I know of.”

Trip nodded his thanks again, to Malcolm and left the mess hall, heading for the turbolift.

He had completely forgotten about his reports, which he had left on the table.
