Chapter Two

Trip arrived in Engineering to see Captain Jonathan Archer standing just inside the room.

“Capn,” Trip said, motioning Jon towards the com controls. Trip knelt down and studied the readouts for a second. “So, What’s with the distress call?”

“We’re still in-route to the planet, we should be there in two and a half hours,” Jon answered.

“Sounds pretty straight forward.”

“Once we’re there, take Malcolm and Dr. Phlox down in the cell-ship. I want to know what this is all about,” Jon said.

“Aye, sir.”

Trip stood up and powered up the com system. Suddenly the panel started to smoke and sparks flew everywhere! Trip jumped back and ran to the power distribution matrix on the other side of Engineering. He then keyed in the sequence that shut down the com system. Trip walked back to the burned panel and opened it up.

“Great,” ,e muttered.

“What’s wrong?” Jon asked.

“The whole system interface is fried! It’ll take months at least to repair! That would be if we had the parts, which we don’t!”

“Do the best you can, Trip.”

“Capn’ there’s nothin’ I can do until we get the parts. If I mess with this it’ll likely make it worse,” Trip said.

“How can you make it worse?” Jon asked.

Then the panel sparked again.

“Like that.” Trip answered.

“What was that?” Jon asked.

“Power surge. We’ve been experiencing them for two weeks now,” Trip said.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“There are at least four reports on your computer with our progress!” Trip shot back.

“Oh.” Jon replied. “We need the com system working before we reach the planet.”

“That’s not going ta be possible,” Trip said.

“Make it possible,” Jon answered before he left.

Trip smiled as the door to Engineering closed. Jonathan had a knack for asking for the impossible and every time Trip had come through. He got to work pulling out all the burned wires.
