Chapter Five

Trip entered Engineering. All the consoles were smoking, save one. He walked over to it and studied it. It was the screen for the exhaust manifold. Trip keyed in a command and the screen changed. It brightened a little as it began listing the damages done to Engineering. What had happened was a severe overload!

As Trip began the repairs he heard a strange growling sound coming from a darkened corner. He got up and shined a flashlight down into the corner. There was Porthos, baring his teeth.

“Porthos! What are ya doin’ here buddy?” Trip asked, wondering how the dog had gotten out of the captain’s quarters.

He didn’t have long to wonder. Porthos then ran out of the shadows and quickly sank his teeth directly into Trip’s leg.

Trip let go a scream.

Travis who had been down the hall heard the scream and came rushing to help. He stopped as he saw what was happening.

“Don’t just stand there, get him off,” Trip said from the ground.

Travis nodded and grabbed a pipe. He brought it down over the dog’s back.

Porthos whined a little then was silent.

Travis helped Trip up off the floor.

“What happened?” Travis asked.

“Don’t know. He just attacked me.”

“Better let the captain know.”

“Yeah,” Trip replied. He then hobbled to Sickbay with Travis a step behind, carrying the dog in his arms.
