Chapter Three

Trip stood in the back of the bridge some hours later still working on the com. He shook his head. It was quite apparent that there was no way for him to get the com working again. Not without the appropriate parts.

“Captain. We’re approaching the planet,” Travis said from the helm console.

“Slow to one third impulse,” Jon ordered.

“Aye sir,” Travis answered as he operated the controls.

“Open a channel,” Jon ordered.

Hoshi Sato, the Communications officer for the Enterprise, nodded as she keyed in the sequence. “Open.”

“This is Captain Jonathan Archer of the Starship Enterprise. We are responding to your distress call.” He looked at Hoshi.

“Nothing yet, sir.”

“Captain, I am detecting no life form readings down there,” T’Pol said.

Then Malcolm Reed sat up in his chair. “Captain, the planet is firing!”

Jon looked to the viewscreen and saw two bright points coming straight at them!

“Hull plat…,” Jon was about to say.

It was too late, the ship rocked with the force of the explosion. Everything that wasn’t bolted down went flying.

“Report!” Jon ordered.

Malcolm crawled back to his station. Jon could see that he was badly hurt.

“Engines and weapons are gone. Hull plating is gone, too,” Malcolm said, clutching his chest.

“Tell me anything that’s good,” Jon said.

Malcolm didn’t speak.

Trip got up from the floor which was covered in debris. He made his way over to T’Pol who was unconscious. She was bleeding from a head wound.

“Medic!”

Jon turned to him. “Hoshi, get Phlox and get him up here!”

Hoshi leapt up and dashed for the turbolift. She entered it, then took out the top panel.

She climbed out of the non-functional turbo lift and started down to Sickbay.
